Republic of India
India with about 1/3 rd the land area of the U.S., is second only to China in population, with over 1 billion people. For thousands of years India was invaded from Iran, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Arabia and the West.
Indian culture has succeeded in absorbing these influences and molding them into a remarkable racial and cultural synthesis. India has many languages, the main one being Hindi, with English the lingua franca. India is predominantly Hindu, but has one of the largest Muslim populations in the world.
The population also includes Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis. India is a rich tapestry of ethnic, religious, and cultural traditions and represents one of the most fascinating and richly rewarding experiences that students could have.
